Elizabeth Kershaw

An unusual and amusing English or possibly Scottish sampler depicting Adam and Eve wearing tartan-like kilts, standing alongside the tree of life, and above "A Representation of Solomon's temple." It is stitched with silk on linen with a four sided berry border, using cross, counted and freehand satin, straight and rice stitches. The verse is:

Adam and Eve
whilst innocent
In Paradise
were plac'd
But soon the
Serpent by is (sic)
Wiles this
happy pair displac'dd

Very good condition and color, one stain (below the lower middle border), linen somewhat darkened, some foxing in the verse, rosewood frame is possible original (remnant of framer"s label on the back). Sight 20" x 17", with frame 26" x 23".
