HELEN VERTUE 1812
A Scottish sampler

Ann How

The sampler is worked in fine silk on a linen ground, in cross stitch in bright colors including pink, mauve, blue, gold, copper, and dark green. The verse reads:

WHILE THUS MY FINGERS OER THE SAMPLER ROVE/
THE LETTERS FORM OR TEACH THE FLOWERS TO BLOW/
OH MAY MY SOUL ASPIRE TO WORLDS ABOVE
AND LEARN BELIEFS ETERNAL THINGS TO KNOW

It is signed and dated "Helen Vertue. Alloa. 1812". (Alloa is a town in Clackmannanshire, Scotland.) A large house dominates the lower register, surrounded by trees, an arcaded floral band and a meandering floral four-sided border. It is framed in an old wood frame with a gilt liner, and mounted to conservator standards on acid free board with chipboard backing. The color and condition is very good, with a few small holes (illustrated). 16-1/4" x 12-3/4"
