A BOOK OF FLOWERS, FRUITS, BEASTS, BIRDS, AND FLIES
Seventeenth-Century Patterns for Embroiderers Printed and Sold by Peter Stent

The numerous examples of 17th century English embroidery that have survived attest to, on the one hand, a great demand in that period for rich materials and elaborate ornamentation and, on the other, an interest in the natural world. The interest was met in part by books of engraved natural history subjects. One English book and print seller in particular who offered customers a wide variety of flowers, animals, and insects was Peter Stent. From 1643 to 1667, Stent published at least 218 different plates of natural history subjects, attracting artists, teachers, and craftspeople including embroiderers. This book presents nineteen of Stent's natural history plates, exact-size facsimiles of a volume now in a private collection. They include over 75 floral and fauna images in a range of styles from scientific to artistic and decorative. An illustrated introduction and essay on Peter Stent provide information on the designs and an analysis of the plates. Readers and researchers will find this collection of natural history designs an important primary source for 17th century English embroidery.
Soft bound, 56 pages, $17.00
