Alte Mustertucjer zum Nachsticken (Old Samplers from the 17th-19th Century, Charted for Reproduction)

by Angelika Walter

Alte Mustertucjer zum Nachsticken

A book of charted graphs of eight entire samplers, with excellent color photos of the antique originals with the reproductions, and text in both German and English. The graphs and instructions for eight complete samplers are very well done, and the choice of samplers is superb (very unusual and lovely designs). The earliest sampler is dated 1679, and features Sibmacher's famous stag motif amongst gorgeous flowers, and an extensive cityscape. Others include a pictorial Nuremberg sampler of 1717, one from Schleswig-Holstein dated 1779, a northern German sampler of 1815 with a lovely shepherdess and other significant figures, an unusual sampler of 1819 from Sulzbach-Rosenberg with lovely solidly cross stitched vignettes of architectural scenes, and a wonderfully bold red and blue northern German sampler of 1843 packed with symbolic motifs. Highly recommended!
