INSPIRED BY MARY

Mary, Queen of
Scots, was kept captive by her cousin, Elizabeth I, for almost twenty years
before she was beheaded in 1587. During that time, Mary produced hundreds of
needle works, many of which were executed in cross stitch using designs from
natural history books, particularly Conrad Gesner's book published in 1560.
Arelate Studio's line called "Inspired by Mary" are cross stitch designs
incorporating several of the main elements from Mary's stitcheries: the
cruciform outline (a modified Alisée Patée cross*), the central animal, the
banner with label, smaller motifs in the four corners of the square, and the
cipher or monogram.

You can make a sweet bag from the same design by working on fine, evenweave
linen, using silk threads. The bag pictured was worked over one thread on 28
count linen. The piece shown was appliquéd to a velvet bag.
