Designed after an embroidered panel made by Mary
Queen of Scots
Similar in shape, design, and execution to "A Catte", this particular design was adapted from a
panel depicting interlaced snakes, the emblem of Bess of
Hardwick's second husband, Sir William Cavendish.
It is executed almost entirely in cross stitch over
two threads of linen, with the outer border filled in with
counted thread satin stitch.
