ABIGAIL
BRAGDON

Stitched in Wells, Maine, when
she was about eleven years old, Abigail Bragdon's sampler is both a lesson
in geography and history. The states are stitched in a sort of geographical
order starting with the most northeastern (Maine) and leading south and
west. The dates following each state represent the generally accepted first
dates of settlement there. The original sampler is in the collection of
Strawbery Banke, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Only cross stitch is required
to work this sampler. |
