SARAH  BROWN
dated 1834
A Memorial Sampler

Sarah Brown stitched this sampler as memorial to her deceased brother, Joseph Brown. The original sampler was stitched with fine silk threads on linen in cross and back stitches. It is full of well executed traditional and symbolic sampler motifs such as a cathedral, a lion, stars, birds, fruit baskets, fir trees, hearts, a crown, flowers, butterflies, acorns, and a beautiful and boldly colored four-sided meandering floral border. The verses in the two side-by-side cartouches are:

With Humble Heart and Tongue my God to thee I Pray O Make me Learn Whilst I Am Young how I May cleanse my Way.

NOW in my Early Days Teach me Thy will to Know O God Thy sanctifying Grace Betimes on me Bestow

It is signed and dated: Sarah Brown Made this sampler to the memory of Joseph Brown Her Brother Finished in the 13th Year of Her Age Sept 21, 1834

The color palette has been reproduced from the original sampler which retains wonderful color. On 40 count linen the finished sampler will measure approximately 13" x 22", almost exactly the size of the original. The project is recommended for any skill level.
