| Reproduced from an early 19th century miniature sampler, probably of English origin, this is an example of the type of plain sewing taught in schools in the last three-quarters of the 19th century. We can speculate that this one was created by a pupil for her benefactress - perhaps an orphan girl for her custodial aunt. Miniature samplers are quite rare. Many existing monochromatic examples probably came from little bound volumes compiled at schools where this type of sewing was taught. Ours was probably made as a presentation piece. It is worked entirely in cross stitch , and comes supplied with silk threads, to be worked just like the original one was. |
