COUNTRY LIFE - 1783
Adapted from an English sampler dated 1783. The original sampler from which this piece was adapted measures 15-1/2" x 12-1/2", and was stitched over one thread of linen on approximately 50-thread-count glazed linen. The house on the left alone, which measures 71 by 62 squares on the graph, worked out to be 1-1/2" x 1-1/4" on the original! The scene across the top of the original sampler, worked over two threads on 35-count linen in this reproduction, covers almost the entire width of the piece. The border is reproduced from the floral border of the original sampler, which was unsigned, but initialed and dated "AB 1783." The verse on the sampler is traditional English, and appears in verse, song, and folk art in different forms, with the same emphasis: a glorification of the simple life.
