JOHN   MURRAY    1840
E. Ferry probably taught the daughter of John Murray and Margaret Mackie to stitch, culminating in this brilliant Scottish sampler, with its spectacular illuminated alphabet and grand blue house with strong horizontal lines, characteristic of Scottish samplers. It is not unusual to find the mother's maiden name and many family initials worked on Scottish samplers. A king, queen, peacock, shepherd, rabbits, flower baskets, and a dog complete the scene below, all surrounded by a traditional strawberry border.
