BARGELLO PANEL 1740
OPTICAL DESIGN BARGELLO PANEL, circa 1740
When we acquired the original needlework panel from which this was reproduced it
was framed in an early to mid 18th century Hogarth style frame and was mounted
over its original hand planed wooden backing. We dated it to around 1740, and
speculate its function might have been as an upholsterer's sample, or perhaps it
was designed to adorn the back side of a hand held or tabletop firescreen, or
mirror. It was in an amazingly fine state of preservation and the colors
reproduced here were taken exactly from the front of the antique panel. The
design seems curiously modern. The only stitch required is Irish (florentine, or
bargello) stitch. We have made our panel into a cushion but it lends itself to
many different decorative uses. On 30 count linen the finished piece, like the
original, will measure approximately 10" x 13".
