FRANCES CHURCH circa 1840
This unusual English sampler, with its wonderful collection of sentimental
vignettes, is a rare example of a later type of pattern record. We have never
seen another sampler like this, with such carefully arranged, and finely
executed oval-shaped motifs, in tidy , symmetric rows. Perhaps Frances meant to
replicate them on pincushions, handkerchiefs, or mementoes for her friends. It's
a fabulous collection of embroidered sentimental virtues. The original sampler,
in the collection of Kathy Seifert, was stitched with silk floss on fine linen.
Some of the lettering style, and the naturalistic floral motifs, reflect the
influence of Berlin patterns, yet the materials used in this sampler are not.
Stitches used are cross, and double running. The original sampler measures
15-1/4"x13-1/4". The Scarlet Letter's reproduction, stitched on 40 count linen,
will measure approximately 15-3/4"x16-3/4". The sampler is recommended for any
skill level.
