ANN CORRIE 1831

Ann Corrie

This sampler and one worked by Jane Relph, share a similar central scene with a cottage, trees, and a recumbent sheep. Both samplers are pictured in publications by Witney Antiques, the latter in AN A to Z of British Samplers, and Ann Corrie's in Samplers: House and Garden (both available through TSL). The sky in the background has been painted blue, certainly a technique favored by their teacher in Kirkoswald, Cumbria, in the north of England. The grass and bushes are worked with chenille (turkeywork) stitch to give the scene dimension and texture, while the sheep is filled in with French knots and the leaves on the trees with bullion stitch. In the reproduction, the sky is colored with a pale blue watercolor marking pen.
