ANN GREANAWALT
This is an early 19th century American marking sampler, worked in silk on unbleached linen. A sampler like this was probably worked at home for a girl to learn her marking stitches for use later in initialing the family's valuable linens. It is a sampler in every sense of the word, offering the challenge of working various stitches. The last line, AG SAMPLER MAY, is perhaps her shorthand version of Ann Greanawalt's sampler finished in May.
