MARY ANN ORAM CIRCA 1820 SAMPLER
The finely stitched antique sampler from which we reproduced this was probably made in England around 1820. It features a verse commonly stitched on early 19th century samplers, both in England and America. Depicted in the lower register is a scene with a church atop a hill (with a gigantic pterodactyl on the roof), and a brick cottage with a fenced garden. (An interesting historic agricultural aside: at that time, livestock were generally left free to roam, hence the necessity to fence in the vegetable, herb, and f lower gardens, to keep hungry beasts out.)
