THE SEVENTEEN SAILORS CIRCA 1780

Seventeen Sailors

We've never seen anything quite like this small late 18th century sampler, featuring a fully rigged sailing ship at sea, with wonderfully naive dolphins breaking through the waves underneath. The various design elements manage to work together yet are quite incongruous: a naturalistic floral border on two sides surrounds this maritime scene, and the four-line verse even goes off in two different directions of meaning! But his is precisely what makes samplers so intriguing. They can range from fine art to folk art at the whim and expertise of the maker. Stitches used are cross in one version; and cross, satin and stem in the other version. Both charted versions are supplied in the kit.
