ANN THOMPSON 1803

Ann Thompson

Oval cross stitched samplers are very unusual and this is an outstanding example. While the oval is not symmetrical as it is done in cross stitch in a rather childishly random way, the design is nonetheless stunning. Sprays of roses adorn the outer border. At the top center the crucified Christ is centered in the verse:

Behold the Saviour of Mankind
Nailed to the Shameful Tree
How vast the love that him inclindbr
To bleed and die for me

Surrounded by counted satin stitched floral cartouches the verse continues below:

Be thou faithfull unto death and I will
give the (sic) a crown of life

Adam and Eve stand alongside the Tree of Life entwined by a menacing black serpent, yet flanked by comical little black dogs wearing collars, and stags seemingly impaled on leafy trees. The final verse is:

For As By One Mans Disobedience Many
Were made Sinners so by the obedience
One shall Many Be made Righteous

Ann Thompson was nine years old when she completed this sampler in 1803. Stitches used in the sampler include counted satin, cross, and stem filling. On 40-count linen it will measure approximately 19"x21", and is recommended for intermediate to advanced level needle workers.

The original antique sampler is also available for purchase.

The reproduction sampler is shown in the photos.
