MARY WILSON
circa 1720

Mary Wilson

This English band sampler exhibits transitional elements of design spanning the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries . An arcaded band of stylized carnations is followed by bands of alphabets and geometric motifs. The focal point of the sampler is the "boxer" band: four putti flank a heart filled with beautiful silver metallic pinwheels.

The work is signed "Mary Wilson born June the 20 1711", hence the circa date of 1720 when she was of the age when sampler-making was part of a young girl's early education.

Stitches used in the sampler are cross, back, double running, eyelet, stem and counted satin. On 35 count linen the finished sampler will measure approximately 10-1/4" x 16-1/2". The graph and instructions have been printed in full color. The sampler is recommended for intermediate level needleworkers, and the original sampler is in the collection of The Scarlet Letter.
